The President of the Gambia Football Federation, Lamin Kabba Bajo, on behalf of the Executive Committee and the entire Gambian football family, extends his warmest congratulations to FIFA President Gianni Infantino as he marks his 10th anniversary at the helm of world football’s governing body, as our sport witnessed unprecedented growth and modernization under his stewardship.
Since assuming office in 2016, President Infantino has spearheaded a revolution in how football is developed, governed, and shared across the globe. His vision of “Making Football Truly Global” has translated into tangible, life-changing interventions for Member Associations, especially in Africa in general and Gambia in particular.
Global Expansion
The historic increase in World Cup participating teams from 32 to 48 ensures that more nations can dream of the ultimate stage, fostering inclusivity and competitive growth. Also, his FIFA Forward program has provided essential funding for developing all aspects of football in developing nations.
Initiatives like the Talent Development Scheme and Grassroots & Amateur programs are identifying the stars of tomorrow in every corner of the world. The FIFA Executive Summit and FIFA Area platforms have strengthened the dialogue between FIFA and its members, ensuring a bottom-up approach to development.
The Impact on Gambian Football
In The Gambia, the impact of President Infantino’s leadership has been profound. Through the strategic support of FIFA’s development programs, Gambian football has witnessed a meteoric rise on the continental and global stage.
“The support from FIFA has not just been financial; it has been structural and visionary. Our journey to becoming twice AFCON finalists is a testament to the enabling environment created under Gianni Infantino’s leadership,” GFF President Lamin Kabba Bajo said.
The investment in technical capacities, the enhancement of the domestic league structure, and the focus on youth development have expanded our talent pool significantly. This foundation allowed our Scorpions to reach the AFCON quarter-finals in their debut appearance and maintain a consistent presence among Africa’s elite.
During our first ever qualification to Cameroon 2022, it was through the FIFA Forward funds that the Federation was able to pay for the services of head coach Tom Saintfiet, throughout his five-year stint with The Gambia.
As we look forward to the next decade, the GFF remains committed to working closely with FIFA to further elevate the beautiful game. We wish President Infantino continued success, wisdom, and health as he continues to lead the world’s most beloved sport.
