The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Machakos County Branch, has officially launched the Capt. Irene Ndanu Soccer Summit, a comprehensive grassroots football programme anchored by a structured countywide tournament and complemented by targeted development and governance initiatives.
The programme was unveiled during a ceremony presided over by FKF President Hussein Mohammed, marking the formal execution of a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening football development at the grassroots level in Machakos County.
Structured Competition with Countywide Reach
The Soccer Summit will engage 480 teams and approximately 9,600 players, drawn from all 40 wards of Machakos County, with competition progressing systematically from ward level to the county finals. The tournament serves as the anchor of the Summit and is designed to create a clear and inclusive participation pathway.
Speaking during the launch, FKF President Hussein Mohammed underscored the importance of structured grassroots football.
“From our recent engagements with grassroots football officials across the country, one message has been clear – talent is everywhere, but structure is what unlocks potential,” said Mohammed.
“Programmes such as this one demonstrate how organised competitions, supported by strong governance, can create real pathways for players, coaches, and administrators.”
Investment in Development and Governance
The overall programme carries a total value of Ksh 20 million, including Ksh 5 million in prize awards, full playing kits, and essential match equipment for all participating teams. Prize structures guarantee parity for both men and women, reinforcing FKF’s commitment to inclusive football development.
Beyond competition, the Summit integrates certified coach training, structured talent identification for high-performance camps, financial literacy programmes for youth, and financial management and governance training for prize-winning teams and FKF Machakos County officials. The programme also includes targeted welfare interventions such as the distribution of dignity packs to female participants.
FKF President Mohammed noted that these elements are critical to sustainable football growth.
“Grassroots football must go beyond match results. It must build capacity, accountability, and life skills,” he added.
“This initiative aligns directly with FKF’s national technical and grassroots development strategy.”
A Platform Built on Partnership
Addressing guests during the ceremony, Capt. Irene Ndanu emphasised the Summit’s broader social impact.
“This partnership is about creating platforms – platforms for talent, for discipline, and for opportunity,” she said.
“When talent meets structure, and passion meets governance, we begin to build something that can transform lives, not just produce winners.”
She further highlighted the importance of engaging youth constructively through sport, noting that structured football programmes play a vital role in empowerment, resilience, and economic opportunity.
A Replicable Model for County Football
From a strategic perspective, the Capt. Irene Ndanu Soccer Summit positions Machakos County as a scalable and replicable model for structured, development-focused, and governance-driven grassroots football programming. The initiative also provides a foundation for how future national competitions, including the Kenya United Cup, can be organised and managed.
FKF reaffirmed its commitment to supporting county-led programmes that prioritise inclusivity, accountability, and long-term development.
