A cruel reminder of the game’s fragility after Sekhukhune United defender Ryan Baartman was forced to retire at just 28 due to a persistent back injury.
Medical specialists advised the defender to bring his professional career to an immediate end, warning that continuing to play could lead to long-term complications. The injury, which has troubled him in recent months, was deemed unlikely to fully heal under the physical demands of top-level football.
Baartman’s retirement draws the curtain on a career that began with Santos FC a decade ago. From there, he built his reputation steadily through spells at Cape Town City FC, Steenberg United, Cape Umoya United and All Stars FC.
It was during his time with All Stars in the Motsepe Foundation Championship that Baartman truly caught the eye. His commanding performances at the back earned widespread praise and ultimately secured his move to Sekhukhune United in 2023. The transfer was seen as a significant step forward, with many tipping him for a breakthrough season in the Premiership.
At Babina Noko, Baartman arrived with momentum and promise, ready to test himself in the top flight. Instead, his journey has been abruptly halted by circumstances beyond his control.
