Mohamed Ouahbi has delivered his first reaction after being appointed head coach of the Morocco national team. The 49-year-old replaces Walid Regragui, who resigned a month and a half after the Atlas Lions’ defeat in the AFCON final on home soil.
With the World Cup approaching in three months, the Moroccan Football Federation has chosen the coach who led the U20 side to the U20 World Cup title last October in Chile.
During his first press conference, Ouahbi expressed pride and determination as he takes charge of the national team. He insisted that he wants to continue the work already done rather than completely change the project. The new coach acknowledged the disappointment caused by the AFCON final loss but emphasized the need for continuity as Morocco prepares to face Brazil, Haiti, and Scotland in Group C at the upcoming World Cup.
“I am aware of the expectations, very honored, and I am truly committed to working with seriousness and humility, with determination, and above all, with great patriotism to continue to develop this team. There is no need for a revolution. We have all experienced a trauma as Moroccans. That final (of the AFCON, editor’s note) was a complicated moment, but I think what’s really important is continuity,” the new head of the Atlas Lions stated.
