FAZ President Keith Mweemba has called for unity and strict adherence to the constitution among football stakeholders in North-Western Province.
Speaking during the reconvened 2025 FAZ North-Western Province elective Annual General Meeting (AGM), Mweemba described the gathering as an important moment for the province’s football leadership.
The AGM was reconvened to fill the positions of Women’s Representative and Committee Member.
These two positions were not among those that were up for election during the 2025 AGM.
“It is an honour to be part of this gathering of great football minds in the province,” Mweemba said.
He noted that the meeting marked his first football assignment in the province since being elected FAZ President in May 2025.
Mweemba acknowledged that the AGM was being held eleven months later than scheduled, but stressed the need to learn from the situation. He emphasised that football leadership must always respect the FAZ constitution.
“It is not something to be proud of that we are conducting this exercise 11 months late. My leadership style is anchored in constitutionalism.”
He also urged delegates to elect leaders who will contribute positively to football development in the province. He called for the election of leaders who will add value to Zambian football and who will embrace reconciliation and unity in the game.
Mweemba expressed hope that the process will strengthen football structures in the province and ensure that the sport remains the ultimate winner. Meanwhile, Robert Lihefu called on football stakeholders in the province to strengthen governance, promote unity and intensify grassroots development in order to grow the game.
Lihefu praised football administrators for their dedication to the development of the sport in the region. The Minister also urged stakeholders to promote transparency, accountability and unity within football administration.
“It is a great honour to be with you today. When I look around this room, I see the dedicated custodians of our nation’s most loved sport,” Lihefu said.
Lihefu also highlighted the importance of grassroots football in securing the future of the country’s national teams.
“The future of our national teams lies in effective grassroots football. We must continue identifying and nurturing young talent while improving local infrastructure,” he said.
He reaffirmed government support for football development, noting that the government of Hakainde Hichilema, who is also Patron of Football Association of Zambia, remains committed to supporting the sport.
Meanwhile, Beatrice Mbunji won the race for the Provincial Women’s Representative position after defeating her only rival by 34 votes to 12. Raphael Kanyanda, who contested the position of Committee Member, was elected unopposed. The two were declared duly elected by Ronald Hatongo.
