South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has launched a sharp critique of the Confederation of African Football, accusing the continental body of failing to apply its own regulations consistently following a controversial episode in the tournament final.
Broos made it clear that his frustration was not directed at either Senegal or Morocco, but rather at CAF’s handling of the situation. The Belgian tactician pointed to a decisive moment in the final when Senegal players reportedly left the pitch for 17 minutes, an incident he believes should have triggered immediate disciplinary action.
“CAF is once again being inconsistent in the application of their own rules,” Broos said, expressing disbelief at the lack of swift intervention. “If they had immediately punished Senegal for going off the pitch for 17 minutes in the final, we wouldn’t be here discussing this now.”
The remarks come amid growing scrutiny over CAF’s governance and match-day decision-making, with critics arguing that delayed or unclear rulings risk undermining the integrity of major competitions.
While the final itself delivered high drama, the fallout now appears set to extend beyond the pitch, raising broader questions about accountability and consistency at the highest levels of African football administration.
