Okoye Explains Why Representing Nigeria Was an Easy Choice

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has shared insights into his strong emotional bond with Nigeria, explaining why he chose to represent the country ahead of Germany at international level.

The 26-year-old Udinese goalkeeper, currently enjoying his third season in Italy’s Serie A, described his experience abroad as rewarding.

Despite building his career in Europe, he emphasized that his connection to Nigeria has always remained strong.

In an interview with SportyTV, Okoye highlighted the role his father played in shaping his identity and keeping him grounded in his Nigerian heritage while growing up in Germany.

“I was raised in Germany, but my father played a major role in my upbringing, especially during my early years,” he said.

“Because of that, I’ve always carried a strong sense of being Nigerian, and I’m proud of it.”

Okoye noted that his decision to commit to Nigeria was never in doubt, even though he had previously represented Germany at youth level.

According to him, playing for the Super Eagles was always a personal goal.

“I always knew Nigeria was where I wanted to play,” he explained.

“Even though I featured for Germany’s youth teams, the opportunity to represent Nigeria felt like a dream come true.”

The former Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper also expressed appreciation for the consistent support he has received from Nigerian fans throughout his career, from his early days in Germany to his time in the Netherlands and now Italy.

“The support from Nigerians means everything to me,” Okoye added.

“They’ve stood by me everywhere I’ve played, and I’m truly grateful for that.”
