FIFA Series: Kenya smash three past Grenada in Rwanda

First half goals from Austin Odhiambo and Ryan Ogam, and a third from substitute Zech Obiero enabled Kenya to return home with one win from the Series, which they used as part of their preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

After their opening fixture against Estonia which Harambee Stars lost 4-5 on penalties, coach Benni McCarthy made a number of changes to the starting XI with goalkeeper Ian Otieno paving the way for Farouk Shikhalo.

Rooney Onyango, Alphonse Omija, and Frank Odhiambo kept their roles at the back while Aboud Omar, who captained the team against Estonia, dropped to the bench being replaced by Clarke Oduor, who turns out for EFL League Two club Grimsby Town, on loan from Bradford City.

Duke Abuya is another player who came in to replace Richard Odada, who missed the penalty against Estonia, and was handed in the armband. Manzur Okwaro kept his midfield role while William Lenkupae started from the bench.

Austin Odhiambo kept his position alongside Ryan Ogam, who started alongside Job Ochieng, and Zech Obiero. With only two minutes played, Kenya almost took the lead but Clarke Oduor wasted an opportunity after being set up by Obuya.

Kenya continued to dominate in the opening exchanges, an improved performance from their start against Estonia. The East African nation got another opportunity from outside the area after Trevon Williams fouled the advancing Obuya.

Austin Odhiambo stepped up to take the free-kick which Trishawn Thomas read well to punch it out for the first corner. The resultant corner was not good enough as Thomas cleared the danger.

However, Kenya’s pressure paid off in the 13th minute when they broke the deadlock. A thunderous left-footed effort from Ryan Ogam from outside areas was punched back into play and Austin Odhiambo reacted quickly to sneak it into the net.

Kenya doubled their lead five minutes later. A quickly taken corner fell to Ben Stanley Omondi, whose effort towards goal was cleared halfway finding Ogam. The former Tusker FC striker smashed it into the bottom right corner for his second of the FIFA Series.
