The Uganda Premier League’s leading contenders all did their part on Saturday, producing a day of expected victories that ensured the battle at the top remains intense.

Table leaders Vipers SC needed a late intervention to overcome bottom side Calvary 1–0 at Kitende, while KCCA cruised past Lugazi 3–0 in Najjembe and SC Villa secured a comfortable 2–0 win away to Entebbe UPPC.

Elsewhere, Express defeated URA 3–1 at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, while Maroons and UPDF played out a goalless draw.

Vipers leave it late

At St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, Vipers had to wait until the closing stages before finally breaking Calvary’s resistance.

Congolese forward Gusto Wa Ilungo Mulungo scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute, finishing from close range after being set up by Junior Yunus Ssentamu.

The Venoms had introduced Ssentamu and Milton Karisa in a double change midway through the second half, and the move proved decisive as the forward’s creativity unlocked a stubborn Calvary defence.

Mulungo, who had himself come on in the 76th minute, was later named man of the match. The narrow victory lifted Vipers to 50 points from 21 matches, keeping them four points ahead of second-placed Kitara.

KCCA continue strong run

In Najjembe, KCCA extended their excellent run of form with a convincing 3–0 victory over Lugazi.

Midfielder Saidi Mayanja opened the scoring in the 19th minute after Lugazi goalkeeper Allan Batali Igama spilled the ball into his path. KCCA doubled the lead in the 57th minute when Mayanja turned provider, setting up striker Ivan Ahimbisibwe, who finished clinically.

Four minutes later, Lugazi defender Paul Wasswa turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Ahimbisibwe to seal the result.

The victory kept KCCA third on 45 points, maintaining pressure on the teams above them.

Villa bounce back

At the Fisheries Ground in Bugonga, SC Villa returned to winning ways with a 2–0 victory over Entebbe UPPC.

Forward Frank Ssebufu gave the Jogoos an early lead in the 10th minute, heading home from Patrick Jonah Kakande’s delivery. Villa doubled the advantage in the 23rd minute when Najib Yiga finished off a well-worked move after being set up by Hassan Mubiru.

The visitors remained disciplined defensively in the second half to protect their lead and secure all three points. The win moved Villa to 41 points, keeping their title hopes alive.

Express punish URA

At Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, Express defeated URA 3–1 in an entertaining encounter. Amos Muwonge opened the scoring in the 35th minute after being set up by John Asiimwe, but URA responded quickly through Ronald Otti six minutes later.
