Nigeria’s aspirations of securing a place at the next FIFA World Cup have been officially extinguished after FIFA rejected a formal petition lodged by the Super Eagles against DR Congo.
The Nigerian Football Federation had submitted the protest following concerns over the eligibility of a DR Congo player fielded during a decisive qualifying fixture. The complaint, which sought disciplinary action and a potential reversal of the match outcome, was reviewed by FIFA’s regulatory bodies in accordance with established eligibility and competition rules.
However, after deliberation, FIFA ruled that there was insufficient basis to uphold Nigeria’s claims, effectively validating DR Congo’s participation and results. The decision is final and binding, leaving no further room for appeal.
The verdict brings a crushing end to Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign, which had already been hanging in the balance pending the outcome of the case. For the Super Eagles, the ruling represents both a sporting and administrative setback, as hopes of salvaging qualification through legal channels have now been dashed.
On the other hand, DR Congo’s progression to the playoffs remains intact, with the Leopards cleared of any wrongdoing. The decision reinforces FIFA’s strict adherence to its regulatory framework, particularly in matters relating to player eligibility and competition integrity.
