FIFA has handed out fines to both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Congolese Association Football Federation following their tense 2026 World Cup qualifier on 16 November 2025.
Nigeria was ordered to pay 1,000 Swiss Francs after fans disrupted the game by throwing objects onto the pitch, while DR Congo received a heftier 5,000 Swiss Francs fine when supporters used laser pointers during play.
FIFA emphasized that such penalties are determined individually and can be appealed.
The match has remained under intense scrutiny ever since Nigeria fell short in a penalty shootout, ending their hopes of reaching the World Cup.
In the wake of the loss, the NFF filed a formal petition with FIFA, questioning the eligibility of several DR Congo players.
The federation claims that some players may hold European passports, potentially conflicting with DR Congo’s domestic rules on dual citizenship.
NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi stressed that the petition is about ensuring transparency in player eligibility, while the Chairman of Nigeria’s National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, urged calm.
He noted that FIFA usually communicates sensitive rulings directly to the federations before making them public.
The list of players under review includes Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Mario Stroeykens, who were notably absent from DR Congo’s latest 26-man squad.
Meanwhile, DR Congo prepares to face the winner of the semi-final between New Caledonia and Jamaica on 31 March.
As the dispute continues, the final decision from FIFA remains pending, keeping the qualification drama alive and raising questions about the path to the 2026 World Cup.
