Hull City assistant coach Dean Holden has delivered an encouraging injury update on Nigerian international Semi Ajayi, raising hopes of a return to action for the defender in the coming weeks.
Ajayi has been sidelined since sustaining a hamstring injury during Nigeria’s bronze medal clash against Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.
The 32-year-old centre-back was forced off in that encounter after an impressive run throughout the tournament, where he emerged as one of the standout performers for the Nigeria national football team.
His absence has been felt at Hull City, with the defender missing the Tigers’ last seven matches across all competitions due to the injury setback.
Providing an update on Ajayi’s recovery, Holden revealed that the former West Brom man is making steady progress, although he has yet to rejoin full team training.
“Semi (Ajayi) is going well, but again, not back in the team training just yet. Toby’s (Collyer) a little bit behind Semi. He’s still doing some individual rehab,” Holden told Hull Live.
The positive assessment suggests that Ajayi is edging closer to a return, even if a precise comeback date has not yet been confirmed.
Before his injury, Ajayi had featured prominently for Hull City this season, making 12 league appearances and contributing one goal from the heart of defence.
His experience and leadership at the back have been crucial for the Tigers, particularly in tight Championship fixtures.
Hull City fans will be eager to see the Nigerian defender back in action as the club continues its push in the league campaign, with Ajayi’s return expected to bolster defensive stability and provide added aerial strength at both ends of the pitch.
