Karim Zito Opens Up on Health Scare After Kotoko Exit

Former Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has revealed the heavy personal toll his time at the club took on his health, admitting he was medically unfit without even realising it while on the job.

Zito disclosed that a visit to his doctor shortly after leaving Kotoko proved to be a crucial turning point. According to him, the medical examination came just in time.

“Seeing my doctor shortly after leaving Kotoko, he told me I was fortunate for the timely check-up,” Zito said. “He noticed I was medically unfit, though I hadn’t realised while working.”

The veteran coach described a period of intense isolation and pressure, explaining how fully consumed he became by the demands of the role. He revealed that he lived much of that time alone, entirely absorbed in the responsibilities of managing one of Ghana’s most demanding football institutions.

“I was living, eating, and talking alone, consumed by the Kotoko job,” he said. “I handled the pressure all by myself. I only managed to see my family on five occasions.”

Kotoko is one of the most scrutinised clubs in Ghanaian football, where expectations are relentless and results are dissected weekly. Zito’s reflections shine a light on the human cost that often accompanies high level coaching, particularly in environments where passion and pressure collide.

His remarks serve as a sobering reminder that behind the tactical decisions and touchline intensity are individuals navigating enormous mental and physical strain.
