Okonkwo’s International Switch to Nigeria Still Pending – NFF

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is yet to complete his international switch from England to Nigeria, despite earlier reports suggesting the process had been approved.

Okonkwo, 24, was born in England to Nigerian parents and has previously represented England at youth level.

The former Arsenal shot-stopper featured for the Young Lions at U-16, U-17, and U-18 levels, but has not earned a senior cap for the Three Lions.

In December 2025, reports indicated that the FIFA had given the green light for the goalkeeper to switch his international allegiance to Nigeria.

However, fresh clarification from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) suggests that the process is still ongoing.

The NFF’s Head of International Competitions, Dayo Enebi, revealed that while Okonkwo remains on the federation’s radar, the paperwork has not been fully completed.

“The process is still ongoing and has not been completed yet,” Enebi told Footy-Africa.

“Okonkwo is one we are looking at, but as of today, his international switch has not been concluded.”

Okonkwo has been in impressive form for Wrexham in the Sky Bet Championship this season.

The 24-year-old has made 35 league appearances, recording nine clean sheets and playing a key role in the club’s campaign.

His potential switch would strengthen Nigeria’s goalkeeping options ahead of upcoming international fixtures, but until the administrative process is formally concluded, the Super Eagles will have to wait.

The situation continues to be monitored closely by Nigerian football authorities and fans alike, as they hope to secure the services of one of the Championship’s consistent performers.
