Orlando Pirates delivered a commanding performance to defeat arch rivals Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 in Saturday’s Betway Premiership Soweto derby at the FNB Stadium.
The Buccaneers bounced back in emphatic fashion after their recent league setback against Mamelodi Sundowns and a surprise Nedbank Cup exit to Casric Stars.
Goals from Tshepang Moremi, Oswin Appollis and Evidence Makgopa sealed an impressive victory and restored confidence in the Pirates camp.
Pirates wasted no time asserting themselves in the high-stakes encounter.
Moremi opened the scoring in just the fifth minute with a powerful strike from distance.
His effort took a slight deflection off Flavio Silva, wrong-footing goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma and giving the visitors an early advantage.
The momentum remained with the Buccaneers, who doubled their lead six minutes before halftime.
Appollis finished off a well-worked move after clever combination play involving Kamogelo Sebelebele and Relebohile Mofokeng, firing home to make it 2-0 at the break.
Chiefs showed more urgency after the restart and tried to claw their way back into the contest.
However, Pirates maintained control with their physical presence and sharp attacking transitions.
The final blow came in the 79th minute when substitute Makgopa met a precise cross from Moremi with a well-timed header to complete the 3-0 triumph.
The victory lifts Pirates three points clear at the top of the Premiership standings, though Mamelodi Sundowns still have an opportunity to respond in their upcoming fixture against Sekhukhune United.
For Amakhosi, the defeat marks a third consecutive loss in all competitions and extends their recent struggles against Pirates.
Their title ambitions have suffered a setback, as they now trail the league leaders by 11 points, albeit with a match in hand.
Both sides return to league action in midweek. Chiefs travel to face Richards Bay on Tuesday, while Pirates will be on the road against Polokwane City on Wednesday.
