Rulani Mokwena Fined by Algerian Ligue 1 as Pressure Mounts at MC Alger

MC Alger head coach Rulani Mokwena has been sanctioned by the Algerian Ligue 1 following misconduct during and after his side’s 2–1 away defeat to MC Oran last Friday.

The loss compounded a difficult spell for Mokwena, who has now overseen back-to-back defeats for the first time since taking charge of the Algerian giants in July 2025. For a club with a well known history of impatience when results falter, the timing could hardly be worse.

Mokwena’s frustrations during the match appear to have spilled over beyond the final whistle. The league’s disciplinary committee confirmed that the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates coach was punished on two counts.

“Rulani Mokwena [Head Coach, No. 25N01E0076] – Caution for protest. Sanction: 100,000 DZD [R12,200],” Ligue 1 announced on its official website.

In a separate charge, the league cited his failure to fulfil media obligations after the match.

“Rulani Mokwena – Refusal to attend the post match press conference. Sanction: Final warning before harsher penalty + 100,000 DZD [R12,200].”

The double sanction not only adds financial penalties but also places Mokwena under close scrutiny going forward, with the final warning suggesting that any repeat offence could trigger a more severe punishment.

The disciplinary action arrives at a delicate moment in his tenure. Having built a reputation in South Africa for his tactical acumen and strong personality on the touchline, Mokwena now faces the challenge of steadying both results and perception in North Africa.

Two consecutive defeats have already intensified speculation about his future. With expectations traditionally sky high at MC Alger, the coming fixtures may prove decisive in determining whether this turbulent spell becomes a brief setback or the beginning of a deeper crisis.
