Senegal’s President Faye to Seek Royal Pardon from Morocco After AFCON Final Incident

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is set to formally reach out to King Mohammed VI of Morocco with an official letter of apology following the conviction of several Senegalese supporters in Morocco.

The supporters were arrested in the aftermath of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, a fiercely contested showdown between Senegal and Morocco.

Tensions flared after the match, which ended in a landmark victory for the Moroccan side, leading to disturbances that resulted in the detention of a number of Senegalese fans.

Moroccan authorities charged and subsequently sentenced those involved in the unrest, a development that has prompted a diplomatic intervention from Dakar.

In response, President Faye is expected to request royal clemency for the affected supporters, while expressing regret over the incidents that overshadowed the historic final.

The Senegalese leader has reportedly emphasized the need to preserve the longstanding ties between both nations, particularly within the framework of African football unity.

By extending an apology and appealing for leniency, the Senegalese government aims to ease tensions and reinforce the spirit of cooperation between the two countries.

The move is widely viewed as an effort to strengthen diplomatic relations and promote continental solidarity after a dramatic and emotionally charged AFCON final.
