Power Dynamos have kept their title defence on track with a 3–1 victory over NAPSA Stars FC at the REIZ Arena, closing the gap on league leaders Red Arrows FC to one point.
With Arrows dropping points in their 2–1 loss at Nchanga Rangers, Power capitalized by picking up maximum points against NAPSA. From the first whistle, Power started brightly and asserted their authority. It was not long before Oswald Mutapa’s men got the opener.
The breakthrough came in the third minute after sustained early pressure, with Power capitalising on a defensive lapse and quick passing move, allowing Ishmael Eddy Ankobo to slot home the opener with a vicious strike that silenced the home crowd.
The lead did not last long as NAPSA found an equaliser through Mathews Tolopa in the 15th minute. Tolopa fired home the equaliser from the centre of the 18-yard box to beat Willard Mwanza.
When it looked like the teams were headed into the break level, Power reclaimed the lead three minutes before the half-time whistle following persistent attacking play from substitute Innocent Kashita, who had replaced the injured Daniel Adoko. Kashita, through a well-worked move sliced through the NAPSA defence before making a composed finish that handed Power back the lead.
Looking for further control of the game, coach Mutapa made a substitution before the resumption of the second half, withdrawing Prince Mumba for Linos Makwaza Jnr.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Power Dynamos firmly in control in the early stages. NAPSA attempted to push forward in search of an equaliser, but that only created more space for the visitors to exploit on the counterattack.
Mutapa then made a tactical change, withdrawing Fredrick Mulambia for Brian Masanyinga to add more width to the visitors’ attack.
The substitute was an instant menace to the NAPSA defence, tormenting them throughout before finding the back of the net in the 76th minute after cutting through the defence and firing a venomous shot into the top-right corner to give Power a 3–1 lead.
Defensively, Power Dynamos were equally impressive, remaining compact and disciplined to deny NAPSA any meaningful sight of goal.
Other substitutions saw Kondwani Chiboni and Eddy Ankobo replaced by Evans Ogbonda and Kapembwa Musonda in the 82nd minute.
The victory breathes fresh life into Power’s title defence campaign. They remain second with 38 points, one behind leaders Arrows.
