Tensions within Cameroonian football have flared once again after Samuel Eto’o launched another pointed criticism of former national team coach Marc Brys, questioning both his competence and the federation’s decision making.
The former Indomitable Lions captain, now president of the Fédération Camerounaise de Football, did not mince his words when addressing the ongoing debate around the national team’s technical direction.
“If the federation has the financial means to pay an incompetent foreign coach, then it is legitimate to invest billions to promote and support a competent Cameroonian coach,” Eto’o said, in remarks that have quickly reignited controversy.
Brys, who was sacked days to the AFCON competition, has once again found himself at the center of a power struggle between the federation and government authorities over control of the national team’s technical bench. The Belgian tactician’s tenure was marked by public disagreements and uncertainty surrounding his authority.
Eto’o’s latest comments reflect a broader argument he has consistently advanced, one centered on prioritizing homegrown expertise and strengthening local coaching structures. His stance suggests that beyond individual performances or results, the issue touches on sovereignty, identity and long term development within Cameroonian football.
For Cameroon, a nation with a rich footballing tradition, the debate is about more than one coach. It is about vision, leadership and who gets entrusted with shaping the future of one of Africa’s proudest football institutions.
