An Enugu frontline governorship candidate for the 2027 election, Ray Kene Ogbodo, has cautioned that aviation safety must rise above politics, publicity and ambition, and that Enugu Air must place safety above politics and publicity.
In a press statement issued by his media aide, Mr Don Victor, Ogbodo stated that he won’t join in politicizing the Enugu Air excursion incident in Benin, but instead, he offered a statement that balances the concern, accountability and constructive leadership without prejudging the official investigation.
The runway excursion involving an Enugu Air aircraft at Benin Airport on Thursday, 23 July 2026, is a serious development that demands sober reflection, complete transparency and decisive action from the Enugu State Government, the airline’s management and Nigeria’s aviation authorities.
Available reports indicate that the Embraer E170 aircraft, operating Flight 4264 from Lagos to Benin, overran the end of Runway 05 while landing at approximately 3:10 p.m. The aircraft was carrying 63 passengers and five crew members. Thankfully, all 68 persons on board were safely accounted for, with no reported injuries or loss of life.
I join the people of Enugu State and Nigerians everywhere in thanking God that this incident did not become a national tragedy. I also commend the flight crew, airport emergency personnel and everyone whose prompt actions contributed to the safe evacuation of the passengers.
However, our relief must not lead to complacency.
An aircraft carrying human lives left the runway and came to rest outside the paved area. Whatever preliminary explanation may be offered, this must be treated as a major aviation safety occurrence. It should neither be minimised as an ordinary operational problem nor exaggerated with unverified claims.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has commenced an investigation into the incident, while the aircraft has reportedly been secured and the relevant regulatory and airport authorities notified.
That investigation must be independent, comprehensive and free from political influence.
The Investigation Must Establish the Truth
The investigation should determine the exact weather and runway conditions at the time of landing, including whether there was standing water, poor drainage, inadequate runway friction or any other environmental factor capable of contributing to the excursion.
It must examine the aircraft’s approach, landing speed, touchdown point, braking performance, tyre condition, technical status and the decisions taken by the flight crew before and during landing.
The flight data recorder, cockpit voice recorder, maintenance records, technical logs, crew training history and relevant air-traffic-control communications must all be properly reviewed.
The public should resist speculation until these facts have been established. Equally, the Enugu State Government and Enugu Air must not attempt to control the narrative before investigators complete their work.
Safety investigations are not conducted to satisfy political interests or protect reputations. They are conducted to identify causes, correct weaknesses and prevent the loss of lives.
Immediate Safety Measures
While the investigation is ongoing, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority should conduct an urgent and comprehensive safety audit of Enugu Air.
That audit should cover:
- the airworthiness and maintenance history of the airline’s aircraft;
- crew qualifications, training and fatigue-management procedures;
- flight-operation and landing policies;
- the airline’s safety-management system;
- emergency-response arrangements;
- operational partnerships and contractors; and
- compliance with all applicable aviation regulations.
Any aircraft, personnel or procedure requiring further examination should be temporarily withdrawn from operation until the regulator is satisfied that it is safe.
Commercial schedules, political deadlines and expansion ambitions must never be placed above passenger safety.
The authorities should also conduct a technical assessment of the Benin Airport runway, its surface condition, drainage system, friction levels, runway-end safety provisions and weather-reporting procedures.
If the investigation establishes that runway conditions contributed to the incident, responsibility must not be placed on the airline alone. Airport infrastructure and regulatory oversight must also be examined.
Passengers Deserve Care and Honest Communication
The passengers and crew involved should receive appropriate medical, emotional and psychological support.
The absence of physical injuries does not mean that everyone escaped trauma. Being inside an aircraft that leaves a runway can be a frightening experience with lasting emotional consequences.
Enugu Air must communicate directly and respectfully with those affected, assist with their disrupted journeys and ensure that their rights and welfare are protected.
The airline should also provide timely public information without speculation, defensiveness or public-relations language designed to minimise legitimate concerns.
Enugu Air Is a Public Responsibility
Enugu Air is not merely another private commercial venture. It is an enterprise established by the Enugu State Government and associated with the resources, reputation and development aspirations of our state.
Therefore, the people of Enugu have a legitimate right to know how the airline is governed, financed and supervised.
The government should disclose the airline’s ownership and management structure, insurance arrangements, maintenance responsibilities, operational partnerships and safety-governance framework.
The Enugu State House of Assembly must exercise responsible oversight—not by interfering with the technical investigation, but by examining whether public resources are being protected and whether the airline is being managed according to the highest professional standards.
The incident should also lead to an independent assessment of the composition and competence of the airline’s board and senior management. Aviation is too technical and too sensitive to be managed as an extension of political patronage.
The Task Ahead
Enugu Air has the potential to improve regional connectivity, encourage investment, promote tourism and strengthen Enugu State’s economy.
However, the success of an airline is not measured mainly by the number of aircraft it acquires, the routes it announces or the publicity surrounding its establishment.
It is measured by the strength of its safety culture, the professionalism of its workforce, the quality of its maintenance, the discipline of its operations and the trust passengers place in it.
The task ahead is therefore greater than recovering the aircraft or restoring normal flight operations.
The task is to build a credible, professionally governed and safety-driven airline.
Enugu Air must not become a political trophy. It must become a respected aviation institution capable of meeting the highest national and international standards.
The airline must develop a culture in which employees can report safety concerns without intimidation. Management must learn from errors rather than conceal them. Expansion must be guided by capacity, competence and safety—not political pressure or the desire to make headlines.
Governor Peter Mbah has stated that safety is non-negotiable and that the state government will cooperate with the investigation. That commitment must now be demonstrated through complete transparency, regulatory compliance and the implementation of every legitimate safety recommendation arising from the investigation.
A Warning That Must Not Be Wasted
Leadership is not tested only when projects are commissioned and achievements celebrated. Leadership is tested most clearly when problems arise, institutions are placed under scrutiny and difficult questions must be answered.
The Benin incident must become a turning point for Enugu Air.
It must lead to stronger safety systems, improved airport coordination, better corporate governance, greater public accountability and renewed confidence among passengers.
We thank God that no life was lost. But gratitude must be accompanied by responsibility.
Every passenger who boards an aircraft entrusts his or her life to the airline, its crew, engineers, regulators and airport authorities. That trust is sacred and must never be taken for granted.
Safety must come before political pride.
Safety must come before profit.
Safety must come before expansion.
Safety must come before ambition.
The people of Enugu deserve development, but we deserve development that is safe, transparent, sustainable and professionally managed.
