Maguire Handed 15-Month Suspended Sentence Over 2020 Mykonos Incident

Harry Maguire has been handed a 15-month suspended prison sentence by a Greek court over his involvement in a 2020 altercation on the island of Mykonos, according to reports from Sky Sports on Wednesday.

The England and Manchester United defender was originally arrested in August 2020 following a late-night brawl in which two police officers were reportedly assaulted.

After being detained for two days, Maguire denied any wrongdoing.

In the initial ruling delivered later that year, the 32-year-old was found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, and violence against public employees.

He was handed a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days. However, under the Greek judicial process, Maguire exercised his right to appeal the decision.

The filing of the appeal nullified the original conviction, automatically granting him a full retrial in a higher court.

That retrial has since been postponed multiple times.

In the latest development, the Greek court imposed a 15-month suspended sentence, meaning Maguire will not serve any prison time.

Despite the ruling, his legal representatives are expected to challenge the guilty verdict once again as part of the ongoing legal process.

Maguire faced allegations of non-serious assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery.

He was convicted on all three counts but continues to maintain his innocence.

The case also involved Maguire’s brother, Joe, and his friend, Christopher Sharman.

Both men were found guilty of related offences stemming from the same incident and received suspended prison sentences in 2020.

Like Maguire, they denied any wrongdoing and have maintained their stance since the incident.

The legal saga has stretched over several years, casting a shadow over the defender’s career at both club and international level.

However, with the sentence suspended and appeals ongoing, Maguire remains free to continue his professional football career while the case works its way through the Greek courts.
