South Africa Offers to Host WAFCON Amid Morocco Concerns, Minister McKenzie Speaks Out

South Africa has officially thrown its hat into the ring to host the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after concerns surfaced over Morocco’s preparedness. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie issued a strong statement questioning the treatment of women’s football on the continent.

“If Morocco is not ready to host the WAFCON, South Africa is ready to host the WAFCON… Why is women’s football being treated with levity?” McKenzie said, emphasizing the need for accountability and professionalism in organizing the tournament.

The minister also addressed perceived political tensions, referencing CAF president Dr. Patrice Motsepe, adding, “I am saying that we will not be held hostage because [Morocco] want to embarrass Dr. Motsepe.”

South Africa’s offer comes as a high-profile intervention highlighting the growing demand for properly resourced and respected women’s competitions. The remarks underscore the country’s readiness to step in at short notice and ensure the tournament proceeds smoothly, while sending a clear message about the importance of investment and commitment in African women’s football.

The decision now rests with CAF, with stakeholders watching closely to see whether Morocco can guarantee the organizational standards required or if South Africa will take over hosting duties.
