Stellies held to stalemate in Bloemfontein by Siwelele

Stellenbosch FC extended their unbeaten run in the Betway Premiership to five matches after being held to a 0-0 draw by Siwelele FC.

Looking to build on recent wins over Kaizer Chiefs and AmZulu in the league, Stellenbosch travelled to Bloemfontein for a mid-week encounter against Siwelele FC where only one point separated the two teams in the league standings heading into the match.

That status quo would remain by the time the full-time whistle rang, albeit not for a lack of trying from either side who both had chances to take the lead in the first half.

The hosts were the first to threaten and struck the crossbar in the 23rd minute through Chibuike Ohizu, who had scored four times against the Maroons before, although the flag was already raised for an offside in the build-up to the effort.

Ibraheem Jabaar, scorer of Stellies’ match-winning goal against Usuthu last week, responded for Gavin Hunt’s side after making a trademark run from midfield into the box. The former Nigeria youth international was unlucky to see his effort deflected out for a corner.

His compatriot, Kazie Enyinnaya, then forced Siwelele ‘keeper Ricardo Goss into a strong save near the start of the second half, while Sage Stephens was almost caught out by a looping ball at the other end soon after.

However, there would be no separating the two sides after 90 minutes, leaving both coaches to settle for a share of the spoils.
