After 24 years leading St. George, Abinet Gebremeskel has announced his resignation amid club challenges.

The leader is stepping down to allow for the restructuring of a club mired in a deep crisis. Recent months have eroded his authority.

In October 2023, he was arrested for corruption and money laundering in a case unrelated to sports. Eight months later, the charges were dropped.

But his return did not ease tensions. On the contrary, St. George has sunk deeper into administrative and financial difficulties. The pressure became too much. The president finally gave in.

In his letter, Abinet Gebremeskel acknowledges that his decision was dictated by urgency.

“The issue is to support the measures taken to save St. George Sport Club. Our club is facing the greatest financial and leadership challenge ever seen in its history.”

Despite a long tenure marked by numerous titles, he recognizes that the club is in danger. His resignation appears to be a sacrifice to prevent collapse.

A transition committee was immediately established. Yonas Geremew will lead it, with Abebaw Zewde as vice president.

Their mission is clear: to stabilize the club, reorganize its management, secure resources, and, above all, prepare for a new era.
