Delta Senators Launch U-19 Unifier Cup in Ozoro

The Delta Senators’ Unifier Cup, an Under-19 football tournament, has been officially launched in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The competition is a joint initiative of the state’s three senators — Joel-Onowakpo Thomas (Delta South), Ned Nwoko (Delta North), and Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) — aimed at bringing young people across the state together through football.

Speaking at the unveiling, Onoriode Omagufi, Special Assistant to Senator Joel-Onowakpo, said the tournament is designed to promote unity among youths from different parts of Delta State while giving them a platform to connect and build lasting relationships.

He added that the competition will also serve as a talent showcase, with outstanding players expected to attract the attention of scouts and agents who could link them with clubs both within Nigeria and abroad.

According to him, the tournament will run for ten days, with teams representing all local government areas in the state.

Zonal qualifiers will be held across the three senatorial districts before the competition moves to the knockout stages.

Omagufi noted that the Local Organising Committee is working to ensure a smooth and well-coordinated event that will not only strengthen unity but also create opportunities for young players to develop their skills.

The draw for the tournament is yet to be conducted, but the opening ceremony is scheduled for April 17 at the Southern Delta University Stadium in Ozoro, which will also host the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final matches.

Zonal matches will take place at Kwale Stadium for Delta North and Sapele Stadium for Delta Central.
