SUPER EAGLES BACKROOM UNDER SPOTLIGHT AHEAD OF FRIENDLIES

Two assistant coaches of the Nigeria national football team, Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu, are due in Turkey this Monday as preparations continue for friendly matches against Iran national football team and the Jordan national football team.

The games are part of Nigeria’s build-up to upcoming competitions, but attention has shifted beyond the pitch to the team’s technical bench.

Both assistants have kept their roles for now, yet there are growing questions within the Nigeria Football Federation about the strength and experience of the coaching crew.

In particular, concerns centre on whether the current assistants can step up if the need arises.

A source within the federation revealed that discussions are ongoing about reinforcing the bench with more seasoned Nigerian coaches to support head coach Eric Chelle.

“There’s a feeling the current assistants may not be ready to lead at short notice,” the source noted, adding that the technical team could soon be expanded.

A meeting between the federation’s technical committee and Chelle is expected in the coming weeks to review the structure.

Ogunmodede recently boosted his credentials by earning a UEFA B licence in Scotland and made history by leading Remo Stars F.C. to their first Nigeria Premier Football League title in the 2024/2025 season.

However, the club’s dip in form this term led to the appointment of Usman Abdallah as head coach.

Ilechukwu, on the other hand, continues to impress in the domestic scene, with Enugu Rangers firmly in the title race.
