AFCON2027 : Uganda Announces Visa Waiver to Boost Tourism Drive

The Government of Uganda has approved a major policy shift aimed at maximizing tourism and fan participation ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with a temporary visa waiver for international visitors.

According to Dr. Dennis Mugimba, the Cabinet of Uganda has sanctioned a visa-free entry window that will begin one month prior to the kickoff of AFCON 2027 and extend until one month after the tournament concludes. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to position the country as a prime destination during the continental football showpiece.

The decision is expected to significantly ease travel logistics for football fans, tourists, and stakeholders planning to attend the tournament, which Uganda will co-host alongside its East African partners under the “Pamoja EA 2027” banner.

Officials believe the waiver will not only increase stadium attendance but also stimulate economic activity across sectors such as hospitality, transport, and local commerce. By removing entry barriers, Uganda aims to attract a surge in international visitors while showcasing its cultural heritage, wildlife, and tourism potential.

“This decision is intended to encourage more visitors to come to Uganda as part of the marketing and promotion of Destination Uganda,” Dr. Mugimba stated.

With preparations for AFCON 2027 gathering pace, the visa waiver underscores Uganda’s commitment to delivering a successful and inclusive tournament, while leveraging football as a catalyst for economic growth and regional integration.
