Ghana U-17 produced a ruthless first-half display to storm into a 2-0 lead against South Africa in their final Group D clash at the Africa Cup of Nations U-17 tournament on Tuesday.
The Black Starlets needed just eight minutes to break the deadlock after South Africa defender N. Mangcaka committed a foul inside the penalty area. Forward J. Narbi stepped up confidently and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to hand Ghana the early advantage.
South Africa struggled to recover from the setback as Ghana continued to dominate possession and dictate the tempo of the game. The West Africans looked sharper in attack and repeatedly troubled the South African backline with quick transitions and aggressive pressing.
The game took another dramatic turn in the 40th minute when VAR intervened to award Ghana a second penalty after a foul involving L. Wunzalgu. Narbi once again kept his composure from the spot in the 42nd minute, calmly converting his second goal of the evening to double Ghana’s lead before the break.
South Africa were forced into an early substitution in the 29th minute, with I. Simama replacing O. Sekgoto as they searched for stability. However, Ghana remained in control throughout the opening 45 minutes, heading into halftime with a comfortable two-goal cushion and one foot firmly in command of the contest.
