Libyan giants Al Ittihad are set to appoint South African tactician Rulani Mokwena as their new head coach in a landmark deal that will reportedly make him the highest-paid club coach in African football.
Mokwena’s move comes shortly after his departure from MC Alger, where he enjoyed a successful spell that included winning the Algerian Super Cup and guiding the team to the top of the Algerian league standings.
At Al Ittihad, the South African coach is expected to be handed full authority over the club’s football operations. The agreement will reportedly allow him to shape the squad according to his vision, including having a decisive role in player recruitment and the overall sporting project.
The Libyan side boasts modern training facilities, a structured youth development setup and one of the most passionate fan bases in the country. Club leadership believes Mokwena’s tactical approach and emphasis on structured football development align perfectly with their ambitions.
With Al Ittihad aiming to strengthen their position domestically and challenge on the continental stage, Mokwena is expected to build a squad capable of competing in the CAF Champions League.
Should the deal be finalized, the appointment would mark another major step in Mokwena’s rapidly rising managerial career as he takes on one of the most ambitious projects in North African football.
