Ghana’s Black Stars suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in an international friendly in Vienna, as the hosts delivered a ruthless and clinical performance.
Austria set the tone early, taking the lead in the 12th minute when Marcel Sabitzer converted from the penalty spot. Ghana struggled to contain the hosts’ intensity, and the pressure told further after the break.
Michael Gregoritsch doubled Austria’s advantage in the 51st minute, before Stefan Posch made it 3-0 just eight minutes later with a composed finish that exposed Ghana’s defensive gaps.
The Black Stars found a response in the 77th minute through captain Jordan Ayew, who finished neatly after an assist from Ibrahim Sulemana to briefly lift Ghana’s spirits.
However, Austria quickly reasserted control. Christoph Baumgartner restored the three-goal cushion in the 79th minute, capitalizing on more defensive lapses, before Nicolas Seiwald added a fifth deep into stoppage time (90+2) to complete the rout.
The emphatic result underlines significant concerns for Ghana, particularly in defensive organization and their ability to cope with high-tempo opposition. With competitive fixtures approaching, the technical team will be under pressure to tighten structures and improve overall cohesion.
For Austria, the victory reflects a side in sharp form, combining fluid attacking play with efficiency in front of goal to overwhelm their opponents.
