Casric Stars produced a stunning cup upset on Saturday after defeating AmaZulu FC 2–1 in extra time in the quarter-final of the Nedbank Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The Motsepe Foundation Championship side started brightly and stunned the hosts early when Mfundo Thikazi struck in the 12th minute to give Casric a 1–0 lead. The visitors maintained their advantage going into halftime as AmaZulu struggled to break down the determined lower-division side.
AmaZulu eventually found their response in the second half when Pule Ekstein scored the equaliser to make it 1–1 and force the contest into extra time. However, Casric Stars refused to fade and continued to threaten against their top-flight opponents.
The decisive moment arrived deep into extra time when Chauke delivered the winning goal, sending the Mpumalanga-based club into the semi-finals and knocking the giants out of the competition.
The result continues a remarkable cup run for Casric Stars, who had already eliminated Orlando Pirates in the previous round. Their latest triumph makes them the first side to secure a place in the last four, reinforcing their reputation as the tournament’s giant killers.
