Gambia: FIFA approves application for appointment of FIFA Talent Coach

The Gambia Football Federation (GFF), is thrilled to announce that FIFA has approved its application for the appointment of a FIFA Talent Coach on track to inaugurating a FIFA/GFF Talent academy under the FIFA Talent Development Scheme(TDS).

This follows the GFF president Lamin Kaba Bajo and his Executive Committee’s wish to maximize the utilization of FIFA Global Football Development offers under High Performance Department and particularly the FIFA Talent Development Scheme, which culminated into the green light to GFF Technical Department to request for the Talent Coach program.

The appointed coach, Michael Spencer, a British national and former academy coach at Charlton Athletic, has arrived in the country and is presently on a 10-days discovery visit to gather information and hold discussions with key stakeholders that he will be working with.

Coach Spencer is accompanied by the FIFA Regional Technical Consultant and TDS Lead for the Gambia Ali Mwebe from Uganda. The FIFA team will later today be joined by Lyson Zulu, FIFA High Performance Specialist from Zambia.

The FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) is a FIFA a global initiative crafted under the Lead of Arsene Wenger, the FIFA Chief of Global Football Development aimed at creating high-quality academies to nurture players with potential to excel on international stage thus “Giving every talent a chance” and accelerate development by creating and fostering “best-with-best” training environment in Member Associations, support nationwide talent identification for boys and girls, and increase contact time with coaches for players in U-12 to U-16 age. Also support development elite local coaches.

The academy is slated to be fully functional by May 2026 and that will make the Gambia and GFF be among the first 13 Member Associations in CAF to activate the FIFA Academy program.
