“I Was Completely Devastated” — Laryea Kingston Opens Up on 2010 World Cup Snub

Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has revisited one of the most painful moments of his career, describing his omission from the 2010 FIFA World Cup squad as both shocking and deeply unfair.

Kingston, who had been a key figure for the Ghana national team in the years leading up to the tournament, revealed that the news of his exclusion came without warning and left him stunned. “For me, the entire situation in 2010 came as a massive shock,” he said. “It shocked not only me but most of my teammates as well.”

The former winger recounted the moment he was called into a meeting with top officials of the Ghana Football Association, where the decision was delivered. According to Kingston, the room was filled with key figures, including then FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi and Randy Abbey, alongside the technical team. “When I walked into the conference room, the entire technical team was there… that was when they broke the news to me,” he recalled.

The emotional impact of that moment has lingered long after his playing days. Kingston admitted that while some former teammates still joke about the incident, he has always believed the decision was unjust. “Even today, some of my former teammates still tease me about it,” he said. “But honestly, I have always felt it was completely unfair. I was completely devastated.”

Ghana went on to enjoy a historic run at the tournament in South Africa, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in the nation’s history. Yet for Kingston, the campaign remains bittersweet — a reminder of what might have been had he been part of that memorable squad.
