FIFA president Gianni Infantino has spoken again about the Vinicius-Prestianni case, calling for stricter measures to combat unacceptable behaviour on the pitch.
In an interview with Sky News on Sunday, Infantino suggested that players who cover their mouths while addressing opponents should be presumed to have “said something they shouldn’t have said.” He stressed that football must stop treating racism solely as a societal issue and instead apply firm, concrete sanctions, especially with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon.
Infantino also argued for sanctions to be adapted to the level of responsibility shown by players. He explained that actions committed in a moment of anger, followed by a genuine apology, should not be punished in the same way as deliberate or repeated offences.
According to him, “players who apologise should benefit from reduced penalties.” On Saturday, the IFAB confirmed that FIFA is considering new measures that could be implemented as early as this summer, while UEFA’s disciplinary investigation into Prestianni is still ongoing.
