Atletico Madrid booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time in nine years after surviving a tense 2-1 home defeat to Barcelona, progressing 3-2 on aggregate in a pulsating encounter at the Metropolitano.

The night ultimately belonged to Ademola Lookman, whose crucial first-half strike proved decisive in sending Diego Simeone’s side into the last four of Europe’s elite competition.

Having secured a commanding 2-0 victory in the first leg at the Camp Nou, Atletico appeared to be in control heading into the return fixture.

However, Barcelona stormed out of the blocks and stunned the home crowd early on.

Teen sensation Lamine Yamal opened the scoring just four minutes into the match, capitalising on a defensive error to slot past goalkeeper Juan Musso.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 24th minute when Ferran Torres latched onto a precise through ball and fired into the top corner, levelling the tie on aggregate.

With momentum firmly in Barcelona’s favour, Atletico needed a response—and it came through Lookman.

In the 31st minute, Marcos Llorente surged down the right flank and delivered a low cross into the box.

Lookman showed pace and composure to beat his marker and calmly slot home at the far post, restoring Atletico’s aggregate advantage and igniting the home crowd.

Barcelona continued to dominate possession after the break, with midfield maestros Pedri and Gavi dictating play.

The visitors thought they had found a third goal, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Their task became even harder late in the game when defender Eric Garcia was sent off following a last-man challenge, leaving Barcelona to finish with ten men.

Despite relentless pressure and a nervy finish, Atletico held firm to secure progression, with Lookman’s vital contribution standing as the turning point of the tie.

Diego Simeone’s men will now face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the semi-finals, as they continue their quest for a first-ever Champions League title.
