Mali defeated South Sudan on Tuesday in the final game of the 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifiers.
At the tournament in Wuhan, the Eagles did their part. Now, their fate lies in Belgium’s hands. Maimouna Haidara and her teammates got the job done.
Just as in the semifinals of the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket, Mali defeated South Sudan 97–74. Everything changed with forty-nine seconds left in the first quarter.
While the Bright Starlets were leading, Mama Cisse gave Mali the lead. This sparked a 9–4 run that launched the African runners-up’s dominance.
Accurate shooting especially from 3-point range tactical discipline, and collective strength carried Mali through this game.
With just one turnover recorded during the game, Maimouna Haidara delivered a standout performance for her team: 19 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals in 28 minutes on the court.
Her teammate Alima Dembele finished as the game’s top scorer with 20 points.
Mission accomplished, Mali now looks to Belgium. The European champions must defeat the Czech Republic.
Only then will Mali qualify for the 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin. At halftime, Mali still has reason to smile. Belgium leads 45–32.
