Manchester City secured the first piece of silverware of the English season in emphatic fashion, defeating Arsenal 2-0 in the League Cup final on Sunday, thanks to a second-half brace from rising star Nico O’Reilly.
Heading into the encounter, Arsenal were widely tipped as favourites, buoyed by their strong domestic form and ambition to end a trophy drought stretching back to 2020.
However, Pep Guardiola’s side delivered a composed and clinical performance to underline their pedigree in cup competitions, lifting the trophy for a record-extending ninth time.
The first half offered little in terms of excitement, with both sides struggling to impose themselves in a cagey midfield battle.
Chances were few and far between, and neither goalkeeper was seriously tested as the teams went into the break deadlocked.
After the restart, City emerged with renewed intensity and began to assert control.
Their breakthrough came on the hour mark when O’Reilly reacted quickest to a costly error by Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Spaniard failed to deal with a delivery into the box, allowing O’Reilly to pounce and head home from close range.
City doubled their advantage just four minutes later in a move that effectively sealed the contest.
Matheus Nunes provided a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, and O’Reilly once again rose above the defence to nod past Kepa, completing a quickfire brace that left Arsenal reeling.
Despite going two goals down, Arsenal struggled to mount a meaningful response.
While they showed urgency in the closing stages and came closest through a late effort that rattled the crossbar, their overall display lacked the creativity and cutting edge required to break down a disciplined City defence.
The defeat brings an abrupt end to Arsenal’s hopes of a potential quadruple this season, while Manchester City’s victory reinforces their dominance in domestic cup competitions under Guardiola.
