Sarah Ogoke Bows Out as D’Tigress Captain After Illustrious Career

Veteran guard Sarah Ogoke has officially stepped down as captain of Nigeria’s D’Tigress, bringing an end to a remarkable international career that spanned more than a decade.

The announcement was made on Monday in Lyon, France, where teammates and officials gathered to honour her contributions to the national team.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, paid tribute to Ogoke’s impact both on and off the court, describing her as a symbol of commitment and resilience.

He noted that her journey with the national team has left a lasting mark, not just in basketball, but in the lives of young girls who look up to her across Nigeria.

Dikko also conveyed the admiration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, highlighting Ogoke’s influence as an athlete, professional, and role model who has balanced multiple responsibilities with excellence.

He commended the Nigeria Basketball Federation and its partners for organising a befitting send-off, adding that it was encouraging to see athletes being celebrated properly at the end of their careers.

Ogoke’s career with D’Tigress is decorated with success, including five FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles — a testament to her consistency and leadership over the years.

The 35-year-old is expected to make her final appearance for Nigeria in Tuesday’s clash against Germany at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament.

Her departure marks the end of an era for D’Tigress, but her legacy will continue to inspire the next generation.
