Super Eagles Crush Jamaica to Defend Unity Cup Crown in Style

Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered an impressive performance on Saturday, defeating Jamaica 3-0 at The Valley Stadium to successfully retain the Unity Cup and extend their unbeaten record in the competition.

Midfielder Alhassan Yusuf was the star of the evening with a brace, while striker Terem Moffi also got on the scoresheet as the three-time African champions secured their fourth Unity Cup title.

Nigeria entered the final after a convincing 2-0 semifinal victory over Zimbabwe, with Femi Azeez netting both goals from assists provided by Moffi.

Jamaica, meanwhile, booked their place in the final by overcoming India 2-0 in the other semifinal.

The Super Eagles made a dream start to the title decider, taking the lead just three minutes into the contest.

A long throw caused problems for the Jamaican defence, and after the goalkeeper could only parry a flicked header, Yusuf reacted quickest to fire the rebound into the net.

Eric Chelle’s men continued to dominate proceedings and doubled their advantage in the 59th minute.

Azeez delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where Moffi was left completely unmarked to head home with ease.

Yusuf completed his brace in stoppage time to put the result beyond doubt.

Philip Otele’s clever pass released the midfielder, who calmly curled his effort past the Jamaican goalkeeper to seal a comprehensive victory.

Earlier in the day, Zimbabwe secured third place in the tournament with a narrow 1-0 win over India.

Prince Dube’s first-half penalty proved decisive as the Warriors held on for the victory.

The Unity Cup served as an important preparation tournament for both Nigeria and Zimbabwe ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which begins later this year.

Nigeria will compete in Group L alongside Tanzania, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, while Zimbabwe have been drawn in Group E with DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Following their successful Unity Cup defence, the Super Eagles will now shift focus to a pair of high-profile international friendlies against Poland and Portugal in June.

Nigeria previously defeated Poland 1-0 in their first-ever meeting in 2018, courtesy of a second-half penalty from Victor Moses.
However, the Super Eagles suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Portugal in a friendly encounter played in 2022, and will be eager to produce a stronger showing when the sides meet again.

The convincing triumph over Jamaica will provide Eric Chelle and his squad with confidence as they continue preparations for the challenges ahead on the international stage.
