The Swiss brand has replaced the traditional metal case of its Digitrend watch entirely, substituting the steel shell with a hood machined from a single block of sapphire. The result is the Digitrend OSII Black, a 150-piece limited edition that does not simply display a movement. Instead, it immerses it in light from every angle.
Spearheaded by co-founder and creative director Matthieu Allègre, the watch is framed by the brand as a “Historical Correction.” It retrieves the retro-futuristic, space-age aesthetic of AMIDA’s original 1976 Digitrend and updates it with technology that was not available at the time. While the sapphire hood is the technical centerpiece, the philosophy behind it is equally compelling. AMIDA is not merely modernizing an older design. Rather, it is completing an idea that the limitations of mid-century manufacturing left unfinished.
The AMIDA Digitrend OSII Black is available for immediate online order at 5,150 CHF, approximately $5,780 USD on the Alcantara strap, and 5,500 CHF, approximately $6,170 USD on the integrated metal bracelet. However, with production limited to just 150 pieces worldwide, the acquisition window is narrow.
What AMIDA is offering is not simply a technically ambitious watch. Instead, it presents a coherent vision of what independent watchmaking can achieve when a brand commits fully to a single design idea rather than chasing broader market trends. As a result, the Digitrend OSII Black is a watch for someone who understands the category well enough to appreciate exactly how unusual it is.
AMIDA Digitrend OSII: What the Sapphire Hood Actually Does
The decision to engineer the hood from a single block of sapphire is not purely aesthetic. In fact, sapphire is harder than steel and more scratch-resistant than virtually any material commonly used in watch construction. This makes the choice both technically superior and visually distinctive.
Moreover, the transparency of the sapphire allows ambient light to enter the watch from all angles. The sapphire serves as the frame, while the coated steel is what the eye naturally settles on. Consequently, the interplay between the transparent exterior and the dark internal architecture creates an effect that photographs struggle to capture. The Movement and Specifications
The AMIDA Digitrend OSII Black uses an automatic in-house jumping-hour module built on a Soprod Newton P024 base caliber. It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 38-hour power reserve.
Meanwhile, the jumping-hour complication displays time through Light Reflecting Display prism technology, presenting a vertical jumping hour alongside scrolling minutes. The result is a display format with genuine visual drama. Unlike a conventional display, the hour changes instantaneously rather than sweeping. Therefore, it suits the watch’s retro-futurist character exceptionally well.
The case measures 39.6mm by 39mm and features compact lug-to-lug dimensions. As a result, it wears more comfortably than its angular silhouette might suggest. Water resistance is rated to 50 meters.
For a watch whose primary purpose is visual rather than practical, the specifications are reassuringly solid. Importantly, AMIDA has not traded technical credibility for conceptual ambition.
