Tunisia: Former federation president between life and death

The former president of the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF), Wadie Jary, has reached a critical stage in his detention.

After a week-long hunger strike to protest against his prison conditions, his health has deteriorated sharply, requiring his emergency transfer to a cardiac intensive care unit in Tunis.

This desperate move marks a dramatic escalation in his standoff with the Tunisian judicial authorities. On the legal front, the former leader’s situation remains deadlocked.

His three-year prison sentence for administrative irregularities was upheld on appeal, a sentence that he and his family continue to vehemently contest.

Despite the severity of the sentence, Wadie Jary maintains his line of defense, denouncing what he claims to be persecution and procedural irregularities that, in his view, undermine the validity of the verdict against him.

At the heart of this case, Wadie Jary continues to proclaim his innocence on the merits of the case. While he acknowledges administrative flaws, he insists that they did not cause any financial damage to the state or lead to any personal enrichment.

By putting his life at risk with this hunger strike, the former strongman of national soccer is attempting to shift the debate toward the very nature of the charges, which he describes as unjust.
