Iran’s decision to boycott the World Cup 2026 has forced FIFA to consider possible replacements just weeks before the tournament begins in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The announcement came from Iran’s Minister of Sports, Ahmad Doyanmali, who strongly criticized the United States while confirming the country’s withdrawal. “There are no conditions under which we would participate in this World Cup,” he declared, pointing to the ongoing geopolitical tensions and recent conflicts affecting the region.
FIFA regulations allow the organization to appoint a replacement team if a qualified nation withdraws from the competition. According to Article 6.7 of the tournament rules, FIFA can decide “at its sole discretion” how to handle such a situation.
At the moment, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates are among the nations being mentioned as potential replacements. Iran was originally scheduled to compete in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand, meaning FIFA may soon have to designate another Asian representative to fill the vacant spot.
