Head coach of the Nigerian national team, Eric Chelle, has challenged his players to remain focused and continue improving despite their impressive win over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final in London.
The Super Eagles secured a convincing 2-0 victory over the Warriors of Zimbabwe, with debutant Femi Azeez scoring both goals to send Nigeria into the final of the competition.
Speaking after the encounter, Chelle praised the effort of his players but stressed that the team still has a long way to go as preparations continue for future competitive matches, especially the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
According to the Malian tactician, the game against Zimbabwe was mainly an opportunity to evaluate the squad and further implement his football philosophy within the team.
He noted that while the result was encouraging, the players must continue adapting to the demands of the technical crew and improve their understanding of the tactical system being introduced.
Chelle also admitted that the Super Eagles made a number of mistakes during the match, particularly in possession, and revealed that immediate work would be done on those weaknesses ahead of the team’s next outing.
The coach maintained that competing at the highest level requires consistency, discipline, and hard work from every player, adding that friendly matches like the Unity Cup are important for building cohesion within the squad.
Nigeria will now turn attention to the Unity Cup final as Chelle continues assessing his options and shaping the team ahead of more crucial international assignments.
