The appointment of Habib Beye as head coach of Olympique de Marseille has not put an end to the controversy surrounding Eric Chelle.
Before OM made its decision, the Nigerian national team coach was repeatedly mentioned as a potential candidate, a rumor that has since sparked strong reactions in Nigeria. Ahmed Shuaibu Gara-Gombe, former president of the Gombe State Football Federation, openly accused Chelle of fabricating interest from major clubs to strengthen his position with the Super Eagles.
Speaking to Afrik Foot, Gara-Gombe claimed that Eric Chelle deliberately exaggerated or invented links with Algeria and Olympique de Marseille during the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. According to him, the coach is using Nigeria as leverage to negotiate a better contract, despite owing his international exposure to the national team.
His statements have fueled debate within Nigerian football, with growing criticism over Chelle’s intentions and future, while casting doubt on the credibility of the alleged OM interest.
