Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has called for renewed belief and tactical discipline within the Black Stars, urging fans and stakeholders to rally behind the current technical setup despite mounting pressure.
Speaking candidly on the team’s recent struggles, Gyan stressed the importance of backing the head coach, whose tenure he described as limited but crucial in the immediate quest for qualification. According to the former striker, unity and support could prove decisive in navigating what he sees as a delicate phase for the national team.
Beyond morale, Gyan pointed to a more pressing issue on the pitch: Ghana’s defensive vulnerability. He warned that the team’s tendency to concede regularly is undermining their competitiveness, insisting that a solid defensive foundation must come before any attacking ambitions.
“We should be more defensively sound in our game before we think about other things,” Gyan noted, highlighting how easily opponents have been able to break through Ghana’s backline in recent matches.
Drawing from history, he referenced the disciplined structure that powered Morocco national football team to a historic run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as well as Ghana’s own resilience during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In both cases, defensive solidity laid the platform for success.
While careful to clarify that he is not part of the technical bench, Gyan framed his remarks as constructive advice rooted in experience, emphasizing that tightening up at the back could be the key to restoring confidence and results.
With the world cup on the horizon, his message lands as both a warning and a rallying call: fix the defence, and the rest may follow.
