Derrick Luckassen has officially chosen to represent Ghana national football team, receiving his first call-up ahead of upcoming international friendlies against Austria national football team and Germany national football team.
The 30-year-old centre-back, currently on the books of Pafos FC, brings experience and versatility to the Ghanaian backline. Born in Amsterdam, Luckassen previously represented the Netherlands at youth level from U18 to U21 but has now opted to switch allegiance to Ghana, boosting the Black Stars’ defensive options.
Luckassen’s call-up comes on the back of a strong season in Cyprus, where he played a key role in Pafos’ 2024–25 league triumph. The defender has made 14 appearances in the league, scoring once, and has contributed four goals across all competitions this season. Notably, he etched his name into club history by scoring Pafos’ first-ever goal in the UEFA Champions League.
Earlier in his career, Luckassen featured for top Dutch sides including PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar, gaining valuable experience in European competitions. His performances have also attracted interest, with Olympiacos FC reportedly monitoring him closely during the winter transfer window.
The call-up offers Luckassen a chance to stake a claim for a place in Ghana’s squad ahead of the upcoming World Cup. With friendlies against strong European opposition on the horizon, the defender will be eager to impress and cement his role in Otto Addo’s plans as the Black Stars continue to shape their squad in preparation for the world cup in USA,Canada and Mexico.
